Care

My guinea pigs make great pets as they are used to regular handling and are very tame. Also alot of my guinea pigs are taken to shows and get good results. All of my guinea pigs live outdoors, in a shed, housed as pairs or more. In the winter i have an electric radiator and the summer an electric fan, to cater for their needs.

We feed our guinea pigs twice a day, they are given a dry mix; dodson and horrel pasture mix mixed with readi grass, a portion of mixed vegetables, bran mash and unlimited supply of hay. Also they have their water changed frequently. Some vegetables we feed are: carrots, spring greens, savoy cabbage, brocolli, cauliflour, pak choi, peppers, sweetcorn, spinach, beetroot (not leaves as they are toxic), parsnips, swede, cucumber.

We house our guinea pigs in hutches, lined with newspapers and a layer of wood shavings, with hay in the bedding compartment. In the winter we also use shreaded paper with the hay to give the guinea pigs extra warmth. I clean out my guinea pigs once a week, usually on a sunday afternoon.

All of my guinea pigs are put into a run, in the shade, on warm days. My guinea pigs don't go out on the grass if it is damp as this can give them a cold. I often put them out when i am cleaning out.
